    Alcohols
    can be prepared in a number of ways including the following:

     

    1)Grignard reaction

    .

     

    2) Reduction of an aldehyde, ketone, or carboxylic acid with the appropriate reducing agent.

     

    3) Substitution

    reaction of hydroxide or water on the appropriate

    alkyl halide.

     

     4) Addition reactions to alkenes (covered in the alkene section). The attachment alcohol 7 shows many of the various ways in which alcohols can be prepared.
